 Tap

Our tap program is comprehensive encompassing ages (2 yrs.-Advanced) and levels (beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate, and advanced).  Beginning technique is specifically offered for more mature students, including a Tween/Junior High Prep Tap and Teen/High School Prep Tap for students new to this genre who wish to learn alongside their peer group.  The demanding, weekly adult tap class welcomes beginners and challenges the intermediate student.

Tap is considered an urban dance style, and our classes feature a traditional Broadway tap vocabulary alongside groundbreaking, new steps from the LA and NYC tap scene. In TDC classes, tap technique is taught on the balls of the feet and with relaxed knees while sending body weight into the floor. Emphasis is placed on sound clarity, complex “a cappella” patterning, and body placement. Tap specifically strengthens the quads and calves while challenging a dancer’s core strength and develops an enhanced sense of musicality.  In recent years, tap has adopted advanced jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop influences; thereby, it is recommended that intermediate and advanced students concurrently study other dance genres. Upper-level Intermediate and Advanced tappers are welcome to schedule a private audition with Laura and join the tap competition team! Please see the shoe link for recommended tap shoes for each level for foot protection and technique development.
